How do you Determine If A DTF Ink Pump Needs Replacement?

The DTF Ink Pump is a critical component in many digital printing devices, responsible for ink supply and printhead cleaning. Over time, ink pumps gradually wear out, leading to irregular ink supply or reduced cleaning efficiency. Failure to replace a worn pump promptly directly impacts print quality. Here is how to assess whether an ink pump needs replacement:

Observe device alarms and notifications

System alarms:

Some devices display alerts such as “Ink supply error” or “Ink pump failure,” or trigger alarms for low ink levels or abnormal ink circulation; these issues may stem from ink pump problems.

Assess based on print quality

Deteriorating print quality:

Issues such as ink dropout, ink misting, stringing, missing colors, blurred images, or banding;

These indicate insufficient suction or unstable ink supply, preventing the printhead from jetting ink correctly.

No improvement after replacing the ink cartridge:

If replacing the ink cartridge yields no improvement, the issue likely lies with the ink pump or ink supply system rather than the cartridge itself.

Check DTF printing ink circulation and operational status

Abnormal viscosity:

Abnormal viscosity readings in the ink circulation system may indicate insufficient pump suction or a malfunction in the solvent addition system.

Poor ink flow:

Restricted ink flow or the presence of air bubbles may indicate insufficient pump pressure or aging seals.

Visual inspection:

Cracks, ink leakage, visible wear, or unusual noises in the pump housing indicate that the pump has aged and requires replacement.

Check related components and systems

Filter clogging:

A clogged ink pump filter can impede ink suction. If replacing the filter does not resolve the issue, the ink pump itself should be inspected.

Damaged pressure sensor:

Abnormal pressure readings could indicate a faulty sensor; however, if the sensor is ruled out as the cause, the pet film printing machine ink pump should be the primary focus of inspection.

Service life and maintenance records

Service life:

Standard brushed-motor ink pumps typically have a lifespan ranging from several hundred to over a thousand hours;

Brushless-motor ink pumps have a longer lifespan but may still experience performance degradation after prolonged operation.

Maintenance Practices:

Failure to clean ink residue from the pump body over an extended period, or the accumulation of heavy ink deposits, can accelerate internal wear and shorten the pump’s service life.

The performance of the ink pump directly impacts printer stability and print quality. Prompt replacement is necessary if issues such as unstable ink supply, poor cleaning performance, or pump aging arise. Regular inspection and maintenance not only extend the equipment’s lifespan but also prevent production interruptions caused by pump failure.
