How to Adjust UV Led Printing Ink Thickness for Optimal Results?

During the UV Led Printing process, adjusting ink thickness plays a crucial role in determining print quality. The following strategies and methods are designed to assist operators in precisely controlling ink thickness to enhance overall print quality.

01 Adjusting Ink Thickness Based on Material Characteristics

Soft or Porous Substrates: These materials tend to absorb and diffuse ink easily. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the ink volume by 20%–40% to ensure image clarity. For instance, when printing on soft, porous materials like canvas, insufficient ink volume can result in a blurry image as the ink is absorbed into the material.

Dark-Colored Substrates: Dark backgrounds tend to obscure ink colors; thus, a higher ink volume is required to ensure the image colors remain vibrant and are not masked by the background hue. For example, when printing a white design on a dark blue plastic sheet, increasing the ink volume helps the white stand out more prominently.

Specialty Materials (e.g., Leather): If the goal is to achieve a pleasant tactile feel or an embossed effect on materials like leather, the ink thickness should be appropriately reduced. This prevents issues such as cracking or a poor tactile finish caused by excessive ink thickness. Typically, the ink thickness can be reduced to between one-third and one-half of the standard thickness.

02 Adjusting Ink Thickness Based on Image Color Requirements

Dark or High-Saturation Images:

Images featuring deep colors and high saturation require increased ink thickness to enhance their color expressiveness and depth. For example, when printing large-scale oil painting reproductions, applying a thicker layer of ink allows dark areas to appear richer in color and ensures natural color transitions.

Vividly Colored Images:

For images featuring bright and vivid colors, slightly increasing the ink thickness helps ensure rich color reproduction and strong visual impact. For instance, when printing colorful patterns such as floral designs, an adequate ink volume ensures that the petals appear more lifelike and vibrant.

Gradient Images:

A progressive ink application technique can be utilized—by adjusting the ink thickness—to achieve natural color transitions. When printing a gradient effect, such as a sky transitioning from blue to white, carefully controlling the ink thickness ensures that the gradient area appears smooth and free of visible color banding.

03 Specific Adjustment Methods: Ink Volume

Percentage Setting:

Within the printing software, you can set the ink volume percentage. Increasing this ratio increases the ink thickness and enhances image quality. Generally, adjustments can be made incrementally, in steps of 10% to 20%.

UV DTF Printing Count Setting:

Increasing the number of print passes allows for ink layering, resulting in a thicker effect while simultaneously conserving ink. For instance, if a standard print typically requires one pass. This can be increased to 2–3 passes; however, one must take the overall time cost into consideration.

Feathering Percentage Setting:

The feathering function enhances the intricacy of the design and the richness of its colors. The adjustable range is 0% to 200%. Generally, a higher value yields superior results, though it will result in a slower production speed. Depending on the level of detail required for the design and your specific time constraints. You can select an appropriate feathering percentage within the 50% to 150% range.
